Bang bang shoot shoot (thanks to the late great Mr Lennon for that chillingly upbeat lyric) …

I’m not usually one for the kind of limp badly written platitudes that you see on Facebook that are usually decorated with love hearts and kittens. In fact I often cringe when I see them but this one is different.

It jumped out at me on Saturday, a day when I got two bits of bad news: one personal and the other relating to a friend and infinitely more upsetting.

I was trying to make sense of it all, wandering aimlessly around a shop looking at the very sorts of goodies I used to buy a few years ago BFA (Before Financial Armageddon), knowing that I’ll never have the money, or the desire, to buy such trinkets again. I looked up and there it was:

Happiness is not a destination, it is a way of life.

In truth I know it to be so, but sometimes the ugly reality of our life in Ireland can cause me to forget.

And this is why I resolve to adopt this as my mantra, particularly over the next few difficult months as I try to sell my house and pack up.

For readers, this year The Brazilian, meself and The Flatpack will be heading to sunnier climes to begin a new chapter in our lives. We will desperately miss the wonderful friends and family we will leave behind, but know that it is our only option. We will miss the stunning beauty of Ireland when the sun shines and its melancholic eeriness when it does not. We will miss Irish wit and the plucky pick-yourself-up-and-get-on-with-it nature.

We will not miss the feckless wasters of Dáil Éireann.

Anyway, this is not the end of the blog (I hope) as you will be treated to, or tortured with, my many rantings and ravings in between times. For instance, how many boxes can you squeeze into a Toyota Corolla? Do Ryanair fly to Rio?  Will The Flatpack need a facelift for her passport photo? Precisely how many cubic metres of junk can we haul ass with? How much will a 1972 Herbie car cost us in south America …

Stay tuned.

  1. I gather I know what the bad news related to a friend refers to and I know it must be devastating to be in her sutuation as well. But I’m sorry to hear you got bad news too. How are you doing?

  2. At the end of the day, it’s numbers. It’s like saying we bought a house for 125 k. During the “boom”, it was worth 200K. We spent a further 50K on it but now it’s only worth 175K, so we’ve “lost” 75K.
In reality we have not in fact lost anything because we never had it. It’s a house – bricks and mortar. The “lost” money was never real or tangible, it was a mythical “value” dreamt up by auctioneers.
At the end of the day it it was the bank who willingly lent the money – an organization in far better position to acknowledge and realize the risk than an ordinary borrower and you cannot give them what you do not have.
You cannot give them money that does not exist any more than you can give them a dragon in a dinner dress.

    • Well yes and what is tangible is the now lost €60k I put into the house of my own money so that I would have a lower mortgage. It was a risk, a gamble and I lost.

Dragon in a dinner dress. Yes. I like that visual 🙂

      • Oh crap! So many people did that, seeing it as an investment. I suppose if you hadn’t it might have meant supplementing the higher mortgage payments from your savings anyway. Still, no consolation, I know.

      • I put that much in because I couldn’t get any more money from the bank. Stupido 🙂

  3. Sorry to read this.. When will you go to Rio??? Don’t stop the blog, I am sure the move and Rio will give you enough to blog about.

I found this post as I was showing Mrs Sensible your photos..

    • Aw shucks! I think yiz are stuck with me for a wee while longer on here 😉 I’m not sure when I’m going but the husband heads in March and I’d love to be there in about June if possible but we have to tie up some loose ends here (sell house or give it away whichever is more realistic). We’ll be in central Brazil though, a good long distance from Rio but still looking forward to it 😉 Hope all is good in Italia?

      • Italy is it’s usual madness. We are voting for the next idiot to run the country.

When we moved from the UK to Italy I stayed behind to sort things out and sell the house. I managed neither, we ended up renting it. Sometimes I think we should have given it away…

      • It’s probably the simplest option alright!

I think we must be due to vote in a new village idiot soon. The way the Irish government is going at the moment we’d be better off electing a dim chimpanzee 😀

What's the craic?
