We had a smoke-related incident yesterday.

I lit the fire and smoke started to puff languidly around the door and up through the vents of the stove. Acrid black stuff. Yuck.

Puzzled, and having a dimwitted day, I peered at it trying to understand what was wrong … something.

Smoke. Doesn’t. Normally. Spew. Out.

Scratching my chin, I closed all the vents to the stove and decided it was because there was no wind (my family has a longstanding history of wind-related suspicions. My late maternal grandmother would blame all sorts of ailments and social injustices on the direction of the wind).

But the clothes were fluttering on the line so that couldn’t be it.

More chin-scratching. Meanwhile, the smoke was getting thicker and the dogs had fled to the clearer atmosphere of the garden.

Suddenly, galvanised by rationality, I raced out shoeless into the garden to check for sparks.

Nope. I vented simultaneously on Facebook and down the smelly-phone, plaintively squawking at The Brazilian to “make it better”. Purlease, I’m freezing here (our house is old and cold).

Hours later Dick Van Dyke arrived home and, giggling like a loon, stuck his hand up the hole at the back of the stove and pulled out a load of soot, a whole bucketful.

Sometimes it pays to have a man around.

He didn’t sing the song though …

Hmph.
